Transport - bus, train, taxi

St Ives has its own bus and train stations and features one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, shown in this video:

The town is an ideal size for walking, and in summer operates a Park and Ride system from the nearby Lelant Saltings rail station as car parking in the town is very limited. Cornwall features excellent public transport services.

Trains change at neigbouring St Erth for Penzance and London, and are operated by First Great Western, tel 08457 000 125. But please do first read the warning about problems buying First Great Western tickets online.

Long distance coaches, which outside the UK are typically called buses, are operated to and from St Ives by National Express.

First Bus  0800 645 1420 operate regular local buses to the rest of the Penwith District and Cornwall, including Penzance bus and rail station, Hayle, and St Just. In summer open top double decker bus 300 travels in a big circle including St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant, St Erth, Marazion,Penzance, and Newlyn, St Buryan, Porthcurno, Land's End, Sennen, St Just, Pendeen, Morvah, and Zennor. Outside of urban areas the bus stops wherever you ask it to, just wave or ask to be let off.

Warning: if booking or buying tickets online from the First Great Western website, to avoid problems please check very carefully that the ticket in your basket matches the description of the ticket you clicked on, and then check that the fine print conditions that come up just before you pay are correct, and correspond to the ticket you clicked on. Otherwise you may find that you buy a ticket with unexpected and inconvenient conditions attached, and a very frustrating task trying to communicate with FGW about it. See the full warning story about buying First Great Western tickets online at FirstGreatWestern.info
